Item #38 - Spend at Least 4 hours at a Day Spa

40 Things for 40 Years in 40 Weeks: Item #38 (Things I Really Enjoy) – Spend at Least 4 hours at a Day Spa

Before we had kids, I used to meet up with my sisters, friends or even just book a couple of treatments at a day spa and shut down for half a day. Now that are lives are so busy and free time is precious – I rarely get the opportunity to do this anymore. So for that reason, I added spending at least 4 hours at a day spa to my #40for40in40 list because it is something that I really enjoy doing but hardly do anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I do treat myself when I can because I think it’s important to do so. It makes me a better mom and wife to get a break but it’s usually a quick hour between kid activities or school pick-ups with no time to sit before or after the treatment and enjoy the spa amenities.

My sisters and I have worked really hard the past three years to help our mom and find the best living situation possible to set her up right. It’s been late nights, weekends, long days, time away from our husbands, kids, pets, friends and certainly taken away what could have been personal time for ourselves. We’ve moved furniture like men, combed through family heirlooms and negotiated for treasures. We have cried, laughed, been angry, been sad and everything else in between. It’s been a roller coaster but currently we are on a straight away with the wind blowing in our hair, the sun shining and at the moment we are not approaching a big drop or loop-dee-loop. Given there was a small break in what has been a crazy 3 years for the three of us, we decided to hit pause and actually enjoy our time together this past weekend when we were scheduled to all be together.

Our day included what I like to refer to as the LOOONNNGGG lunch. You know the one you had before kids where your food is still hot, you aren’t getting up 47 times to get this or that for your kids, you don’t cut up anyone else’s food and you don’t have to pull the rip cord before you order dessert because someone (maybe even you!) is melting down. Ahhh, the good ol’ days. The day also included 45 minutes in the hot tub talking and enjoying more kid-free time. This gift of time was only to be surpassed by the 90 minute massages that followed for all of us. We were all so relaxed at the end that we just sat in our robes and stared out the windows of the relaxation room in silence. Now that is a rare moment between sisters. Ha!

Thank you to my two sisters for helping me check this one off the list! It was a great day together with the three of us and I loved every minute. I am also grateful to our husbands that held down the three respective forts so that we could shut down for a few hours and step off the hamster wheel we’ve been running side by side on these past 3 years. Thanks guys!

3 items checked off the list and 37 to go! Stay tuned for more… #40for40in40
